Kirsty Alman is a 2009 graduate from the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, specialising in Jewellery. Currently she is the Artist in Residence at UCA Farnham and has been developing and working on two collections of work, firstly the Cluster collection, and secondly the Loop collection.
The Cluster Collection is a compilation of pieces that are historically inspired. The set is of an opulent and decadent style, that conveys the excess of the baroque period, combined with the visual effect of ageing and decay.
Kirsty has experimented with the process of drop casting molten silver, to produce one off exciting encrusted forms with an antiqued gold colouring. Using the natural gaps in these drop cast elements she has set the pieces in intricate claw settings that raise the pieces up in a manner that gives them status and prominence that is accentuated by the use of rough-cut, cabochon and faceted semi-precious gemstones which compliments the rough organic pieces and helps evoke the extravagance of the baroque period and Rococo style that inspires her.
However the Loop Collection is very different compared to the Clusters, they have a much lighter summery feel that combines fashion with fun. The collection is made up of one-off wearable items, which are unique and involve the wearer by allowing personalisation, interaction and adaptation. There is a medley of different materials such as the vintage fabrics, lace and freshwater pearls that she has gathered over the year that are then combined with 925 Stirling silver, 9ct gold and semi-precious stones. The wearer can change the central fabric disc and adapt it by embroidery and layering the fabric. This ensures that each piece is unique to the wearer.
